What Is Tabtouch?
The name for monopoly totalisator organisations in Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa is “Totalisator Agency Board,” which is always shortened to “TAB” or “T.A.B.” They run betting shops and let people bet online. They used to be owned by the government, but in Australia, most of them are now privately owned. In Victoria, for example, the Victorian Totalisator Agency Board started as a state-run business in March 1961. It was turned over to private ownership in 1994.
Most Australian TABs used to be run by the state governments, but they have since been privatised, starting with Victoria in 1994 (when it became Tabcorp), then New South Wales in 1998 (when it became Tab Limited), and Queensland in 1999. (becoming TAB Queensland Limited, later UniTAB Limited when it merged with the South Australian TAB). Tabcorp and Tab Limited later merged in 2004, and UniTAB and Tattersall’s, which ran lotteries, merged in 2006 to form Tatts Group.
In 2015, TABs in Queensland, South Australia, the Northern Territory, and Tasmania were renamed UBET as part of a rebranding of the UniTAB division of Tatts Group. The TattsBet brand was also removed online. In 2019, after Tatts Group and Tabcorp merged, UBET stores were renamed “TAB” to match the style of branding used by Tabcorp at the time. The Western Australia TAB was set up in 1961 and is still run by the state. Racing and Wagering Western Australia is in charge of it now. In 2013, WA TAB changed its name to TABtouch.
