Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) is a state-owned company that is in charge of “maintaining, operating, improving, and regulating all scheduled seaports” along Kenya’s Indian Ocean coast, especially Kilindini Harbour in Mombasa. Other KPA ports include Lamu, Malindi, Kilifi, Mtwapa, Kiunga, Shimoni, Funzi and Vanga.
Kenya Ports Authority has money in Kenya National Shipping Line. Kenya National Shipping Line is a state-owned company that was started in 1989 and is now owned by KPA and three non-Kenyan companies.
In 1989, the government of Kenya put all of the existing ferry services, including the Likoni Ferry service in Likoni, Mombasa, under one company called Kenya Ferry Services. This company was a subsidiary of the KPA. In 1998, the subsidiary became an independent Kenyan state corporation. KPA owned 20% of it, and other Kenyan government agencies owned the other 80%.
KPA also owns a number of sports teams, including Bandari FC, which plays in the Kenyan Premier League, and a top basketball club.
In August 2014, Kenya Ports Authority and China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) made a deal worth $478 million for the construction of three berths at Port Lamu. With the completion of the US$24 billion Lamu Port and Lamu-Southern Sudan-Ethiopia Transport Corridor (LAPSSET), which includes the three new berths, Port Lamu will have a total of 32 berths.
